AFRICANGLOBE – An Al-Qaeda loyalist group in Egypt declared war on Ethiopia today after Ethiopia started diverting a stretch of the Blue Nile to make way for a massive $4.7bn hydroelectric power plant.

Sheikh Abdel-Akher Hammad, leader of Al-Jamaa Islamiya calls on Egypt to fight Ethiopia and defend “its honour” over the construction of the great renaisance dam.

Speaking on Al-Arabiya satellite channel, Hammad said Ethiopia’s move would reduce Egypt’s water supply and damage the nation’s national security. “If such a war is forged against us, we are ready to fight and we will embark on it with all our strength to defend our honour,” Hammad added.

Al-Jamaa al Islamiya is an Egyptian Sunni Islamist movement, and is considered a terrorist organization by the United States and European Union. The group is dedicated to establish an Islamic state of Egypt.

Ayman al-Zawahiri, deputy leader of al-Qaeda has previously announced his group’s alliance with Al-Gama al-Islamiyya. In a video released on the internet on 5 August 2006. Zawahiri said “We bring good tidings to the Muslim nation about a big faction of the knights of Al-Gama’a Islamiyya uniting with Al-Qaeda,”

Egypt’s foreign ministry on Wednesday has summoned Ethiopian Ambassador to Egypt, Mahmoud Dardir to express its anger displeasure with Ethiopia’s construction of a major dam on the Blue Nile.

The Grand Renaissance Dam, which is being built in the Benishangul-Gumuz region bordering Sudan, will eventually have a 6,000 megawatt capacity, according to the Ethiopian government. This is the equivalent of at least six nuclear power plants.
