Legend has it that the present day American Foxhound can trace its roots from the favorite hunting dogs of George Washington. General Lafayette, the French general that fought in the American Revolution has given George Washington French Foxhounds. George Washington had an important role in the history of American Foxhounds as it was from his French Foxhounds that this breed has originated.

Present day American Foxhounds, just as their ancestors, live and hunt in packs. American Foxhounds are keen hunters famed for their musical voice that can be heard for miles. Because of a high prey drive, it would be very difficult for these dogs to call off once they have found a prey. These dogs will constantly bay while following a prey and once the animal is found and cornered, the vocalization will change to signal the human hunters that follow on horseback .

An American Foxhound is a handsome breed. The black, tan and white patches on the short coat that takes no particular shape, the large brown or hazel eyes, and the long wide ears as well as the long tail that is carried moderately high give the dog an impressive appearance. American Foxhound is large breed with an imposing appearance but this hunter is known for its mild manners and gentleness to children. American Foxhounds are loyal, sweet and easy going dogs. American Foxhounds are utilized to hunt but can these dogs adapt to being a home companion?

It is the nature of American Foxhounds to hunt in packs. Being dogs that are hunted in packs, American Foxhounds would be more people oriented and less human oriented. Modern Day American Foxhounds were accustomed to the same life their progenitors live. These dogs are pack oriented thus they would be in their natural element if allowed to live, play and hunt with other dogs. American Foxhounds though can adapt to the life of a home companion.

Apartment living is not for an American Foxhound because of its high exercise requirements. The ideal owner of this dog is one that is athletic as the dog would make a good running or jogging companion. The owner of an American Foxhound has to have the ability to control the dog as being a hound it would manifest stubbornness and have the inclination to own the master. American Foxhounds are naturally affectionate but because they have the tendency to manifest their stubborn streak, these dogs have to be obedience trained and socialized to make them well mannered pets.
