Republican Says America Was Better Off During Slavery

Another Republican representative has decided to bring up the issue of slavery, adding his name to a growing list.

Speaking on a conference call to support the “40 days to save America” plan created by Pastor Rick Scarborough, Right Wing Watch reports that Texas Republican Rep. Louie Gohmert, decided to bring up slavery, calling it a “blot on our existence” and how it relates to God and religion.

“There is so much that is so critical to whether or not this country continues…No explanation as to why we’ve been so blessed other than the people who went before us were blessed, they followed God’s rule book, in our founding they followed biblical teachings. We strayed away at different times, Andrew Jackson’s time was not a great time, at different times slavery was a blot on our existence, but the trouble is we have never as an entire nation overall been so far away from God’s teaching and so openly rebelling, even from the top, against God’s teachings in the Bible.”

Just two weeks ago, Arkansas Rep. Jon Hubbard was found to have defended slavery in his memoirs and his statements were reinforced by fellow Arkansas Republican, Loy Mauch. Both congressman were scheduled to hold a fundraiser at a local restaurant, but the event was cancelled after fear of negative backlash from their controversial statements.

The United States, despite what the religious right continues to say, is a secular nation with secular laws. The Founding Fathers created a nation where all citizens are free to follow or not follow any religion they decide fits their life. Unlike Theocratic nations, the United States doesn’t hold one religion over another. For people like Rep. Gohmert to continue to push the false claim that the United States is a “Christian Nation” is factually inaccurate. While Gohmert and otherRepublicans continue to bring up horrific actions in the nation’s history, like slavery, it only furthers the narrative that the Republican party is a party with an ideology that is too extreme for the majority of the American people.
