AFRICANGLOBE – A 19-year-old Iowa man who filmed himself molesting a baby girl avoided further time behind bars after receiving a suspended sentence, according to reports.
A judge handed down the 10-year suspended term for Kraigen Grooms on Monday after he pleaded guilty to engaging in a lascivious act with a child.
Police in Ottumwa, roughly 85 miles southeast of Des Moines, arrested Kraigen in March 2014 after the Department of Homeland Security released a photo of an 18- to 20-year-old man investigators then identified only as “John Doe.”
Federal agents said the monster pedophile had posted pictures to an underground child pornography website of himself having sex with a 12- to 18-month-old baby girl, according to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
He faced felony sex abuse charges and a possible 25-year prison sentence, local media reported at the time of his arrest. The sentence handed down Monday by a Wapello County judge includes five years of supervised release.
The judge also required the ruthless sex terrorist, who sometimes lists his last name as “Simmers,” to register as a sex offender for life. The Ottumwa man spent time in juvenile detention and then county jail as delays set the trial back two years, Ottumwa Radio reported.
He was released from jail after pleading guilty in July, though authorities ordered him to wear a GPS monitoring device. It wasn’t immediately clear whether he had been given credit for time served in jail.
Wapello County Attorney Gary Oldenburger didn’t immediately return a phone call seeking comment Wednesday afternoon.
The suspended sentence Monday followed a federal manhunt. ICE announced the pedophile had been captured just a day after the agency asked for the public’s help in identifying and capturing “John Doe.”
Investigators initially said he performed a sex act with the toddler in April 2013 in the Dallas-Fort Worth area of Texas. A baseball cap he was seen wearing in the photos on the child porn site was only available in the DFW Metroplex at the time, the feds said.
Ottumwa police later said the man molested the girl in an apartment in the small city. Local and federal investigators heard from residents after the “John Doe” picture spread online, Ottumwa Police Chief Tom McAndrew said.
“Investigators found out the subject was from Ottumwa,” McAndrew said. “We used pictures that we had of the suspect to identify him and based on those photographs they did appear to be the same subject so the investigation went from there.”
