AFRICANGLOBE - On the eve of President Jacob Zuma’s State of the Nation address to parliament on 9 February, his deputy, Cyril Ramaphosa, announced the government is to bring in a minimum wage of R20 ($1.5) an hour in a so-called renewed attack on the country’s chronic inequality.
AFRICANGLOBE - Economists are divided. Some argue that a minimum wage will make workers too expensive and unemployment and destitution will rise. Others argue that higher pay scales will not only curb poverty but will boost consumption; and the benefits of an increased disposable income will extend more widely to salaried workers and their dependents.
AFRICANGLOBE - There is a growing movement to raise the wages of fast food workers, with the rallying cry of $15 an hour. The protests come in the backdrop of a national push for a higher minimum wage, but are focused on one of America's largest low-wage industries.
AFRICANGLOBE - Here is where the math of inequality comes into play. We haven't given minimum wage workers a raise in more than five years, yet inflation has continued. So minimum wage workers' purchasing power has been falling. In 2009, $15,080 a year would place a single mother with a child above the poverty threshold. Today, she and her child would be living in poverty.
AFRICANGLOBE If politicians want to help Black people, they should patronize Black companies and give more contracting opportunities to Black entrepreneurs. To increase jobs for Blacks in 2014 politicians have to understand that Black businesses hire Black workers! We need to patronize each other. We need to hire each other.
