AFRICANGLOBE - When Missouri students head back to the classroom in the new year, bullying and brawling could have much stiffer sentences than the typical punishments of detention, suspension or expulsion. They could land kids in juvenile detention centers. That’s because on January 1, third-degree assault and cases of harassment where the victim suffers “emotional distress” will become class E felonies.
AFRICANGLOBE - Heavily-armed members of a controversial right-wing "patriot" group added an extra dose of unease to protests in Ferguson, Missouri, early Tuesday. The Oath Keepers organization says its members — all former military, police and first responders — pledge to "defend the Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic."
AFRICANGLOBE - Ferguson’s basic problem – a Black town run by whites – is not isolated. It persists in towns across the South and border states like Missouri, a hangover from an era of racial discrimination. But if events there are left to fester, the situation could mirror Selma in 1965.
AFRICANGLOBE - Two police officers were shot during a protest outside Ferguson, Missouri, police headquarters early on Thursday, police said, just hours after the city's police chief quit following a damning U.S. Justice Department report into his force.
AFRICANGLOBE - St. Louis County Police are making video and still images public in hopes of arresting alleged looters. Shawn McGuire, a police spokesman, said the release of the videos has taken time because detectives not only are working the rebellion cases but also current crimes. They hope people in the community will help identify people.
AFRICANGLOBE - Many Americans, but Blacks in particular, expected that great achievements would follow from the election of Barack Obama. While few, if any, expected that the race problem would disappear, quite a few expected the fulfilment of Martin Luther King’s dream. It was assumed that “freedom” had finally come, and that Jim Crow and the colour bar would be anachronisms of the past. There is now a great deal of disappointment among some naive Black folk.
AFRICANGLOBE - Police said Tuesday that more than 150 shots were fired in Ferguson, Missouri, during a night of unrest that followed a grand jury’s decision not to charge thug cop Darren Wilson for the murder of teenager Michael Brown.
AFRICANGLOBE - I have no idea what happens now in Ferguson but I do know some Blacks in Missouri. The Missouri Blacks that I know are scared! Not just afraid of cops, they are timid in general. They are slow to respond, reluctant to stand up and speak out and have little desire to fight for their children and their community. Victims and parents typically say that Black community violence is not the answer but history says the opposite.
AFRICANGLOBE - Police arrested at least two demonstrators in Ferguson, Missouri, for a second night running as tensions simmer ahead of a grand jury decision whether to charge thug cop Darren Wilson for gunning down an unarmed teenager in August.
AFRICANGLOBE - A recent study found that while non-Whites make up 37.2 percent of the U.S. population, they account for only 10 percent of elected officials at the federal, state and county levels. By contrast, White men, who make up 31 percent of the population, account for 65 percent of representatives.
AFRICANGLOBE - The crackdown on peaceful protesters by police in Ferguson, Missouri violated numerous US and international laws, according to a report published Friday by Amnesty International.
AFRICANGLOBE - As descendants of the slave patrollers of the American slaveocracy, police are on the front lines of maintaining the hierarchies of race, White privilege, and White supremacy in the United States. The “I am Darren Wilson” wristband evokes the demons of White racial terrorism against Black Americans.
AFRICANGLOBE - A new video shows American police officers shot dead a young African-American man in Missouri a few days after a Black teenager, Michael Brown was slaughtered by police. Two police officers on Tuesday killed 25-year-old Kajieme Powell after a report of a theft in St. Louis.
AFRICANGLOBE - Stolen Lives estimates that since Amadou Diallo was killed in 1999, unarmed and fired upon forty-one times outside his apartment building, at least 249 people have been killed by NYPD—the majority Black men or teenagers. “To be Black and male is to be always at war,”
AFRICANGLOBE For decades, Missouri has spawned or attracted many of the nation's most virulent racists, including neo-Nazis and the remnants of the once-powerful Ku Klux Klan. Associated with violent criminality and crackpot religious extremism, these fringe groups could never wield much influence in the post-civil rights era. Beyond those marginalized outfits, however, exists another White supremacist group whose leaders have long enjoyed the patronage of right-wing Republican politicians.
AFRICANGLOBE - If you’re a Black teenager, a Black woman or a Black man wherever you are, no matter what city you’re in you are in “Ferguson”! I’ve said many times over the years that you need serious solutions to serious Black community problems. The cookie cutter approach to addressing issues of concern to African Americans has never worked well and that approach never will.
