AFRICANGLOBE - Just three years have passed since an American-led bombing campaign destroyed the government of Moammar Gaddafi in Libya. At first that operation felt like a victory for peace and freedom. By bringing down the longtime leader, US imperialism presumed they had “liberated” Libyans and that they would quickly settle into pro-American democracy.
AFRICANGLOBE - Foreigners have been urged to leave Libya by their governments, as fighting spreads across the country. Britain, France, Germany and the Netherlands have joined the US in urging citizens to leave as soon as possible.
AFRICANGLOBE - Rival rebel groups have clashed at Tripoli's international airport, halting all flights, according to media reports. One person was reportedly killed. "The traffic at the airport will be suspended for three... days," an official at the state-run Libyan Airways told independent site Al-Wasat.
AFRICANGLOBE - All civilians deserve protection, but some civilians deserve more protection than others. Or so it seems in Libya today. Two years ago, the U.N. Security Council authorized a military operation by NATO with a mandate to protect civilians who were under attack by Moammar Gaddafi's forces. That operation led to Gaddafi's fall.
Libya’s new leaders said Tuesday that prisoners held by revolutionary forces have been abused, but insisted the mistreatment was not systematic and pledged to tackle the problem. The acknowledgment comes a day after the U.N. released a report a detailing alleged torture and ill treatment in lockups controlled by the forces that overthrew Moammar Gaddafi.
The 42-year rule of Moammar Gaddafi appeared on the verge of collapse early Monday, with rebel supporters making it to the same Tripoli square where regime loyalists had congregated for months.
