AFRICANGLOBE – A Ugandan government spokesman has accused the United States of “blackmail” after President Barack Obama’s administration cut funding to Uganda and canceled a regional military exercise in response to a new law criminalizing homosexuality.

Ofwono Opondo told reporters that as a sovereign country, Uganda would continue to make decisions in its best interest.

Opondo said his government rejects the U.S. decision as blackmail.

“We think it is simply a blackmail. We have said it before, homosexuality is not a fundamental human right. In our own constitution, it is not guaranteed as a fundamental right,” said Opondo.

On Thursday, the U.S. announced it had canceled plans for a U.S.-sponsored military exercise that was going to be held in Uganda. The Obama administration also cut funding to the country and barred Ugandans believed to be involved in human rights abuses (non-homosexuals) from entering the United States.

U.S. National Security Council spokeswoman Caitlin Hayden said Uganda’s legislation ran “counter to universal human rights.”

In February, President Yoweri Museveni signed the measure that criminalizes homosexuality with punishments of up to life in prison for aggravated homosexuality (sex with a minor while HIV positive). The legislation drew widespread international condemnation.

Opondo was asked if he believed U.S. opposition would jeopardize President Museveni’s chances of being invited to a White House summit with African leaders in August.

“The United States government should use that summit to engage with the president of Uganda through diplomatic channels rather than blackmail. Preventing him from attending the summit, that would not in any way cancel the validity of the law passed by Uganda. So, we think that continuous engagement is much better than blackmail,” said Opondo.

Opondo also said the U.S. did not formally notify Uganda when it announced the new penalties on Thursday. He said the Ugandan government found out about the U.S. decision through media reports.

Homosexuality is a crime in 38 African countries.

Why is it that America is not targeting countries such as Saudi Arabia and Egypt, where homosexuals are given the death penalty? Why are African countries alone being targeted with sanctions and sabotage for not accepting homosexuality?

The Sex Trade In East Africa

  1. Do any of you know how to read with a fully understanding of what has been written? I bet not. Did the U.S bring homosexuality to Africa/Uganda? No! So, how exactly are they forcing it on anyone? All is simply saying to Uganda is; stop abusing them; they aren’t saying embrace them. The U.S. is a corporation and they have the right to decide who they do business with. This is about human rights and unfortunately the rights of gays are being violated in Uganda. I’m sure if the punishment wasn’t severe abuse it wouldn’t be a problem. Don’t turn this into something it isn’t. Oh, and are homosexuals being prosecuted in Arab/M.E countries? A resounding NO, yet here you lot are mentioning them. Gosh, I wonder why you love to wear your backwardness on your heads like its something to behold!

  2. Because,we depend on them to feed us .we are not doing for self and whenever you have your mouth in another man’s kitchen, you are a slave of that man.we are to blame ourselves

  3. Susanna, I can assure that I am not. And for you to write that says a lot about you. Moving forward, I believe that they should not be in forcing what we should be or not. We are our own people.

  4. Rirhandzu, they’ve created a system for us to come to their country by destroying our home. A lot of people are afraid to go back home because they fear their very own life is short, that’s the fear they’ve implanted in us.

  5. Only those connected to or living in Africa knows wat America is putting us thru as for yo kind u jus white butt lickers. Shame I see yo kind in Django unchained

  6. Stupid Asheda so your money have conditions? And I do hope u knw tht we knw tht u Americans are the trouble causers , u cause all this stupid inhouse fytng in Africa by funding terror so tht u may loot our resources . To HELL with u

  7. They are trying to reduce baby production. Because if you’re gay, you’re less likely to produce. It’s a plan they have and we can only hope it doesn’t work.

  8. Ughh. Could it be because Africans are beheading gays & torturing them like no other nation before!. Africa or not..that is just pure insanity.

  9. Then it’s time to keep that information in the “Fore Front” of everybodies eyes and ears. IF, those notions are doing such things and are not being held to the same standards then America is committing “Anti-Kemetism” and the whole world needs to know how they roll.

  10. America is a great disgrace to the human race, they r trying to deprive God’s commandments, but surely their price awaits for them.they claim to help but u cant help someone on condition n returns, something anomorlous, anyway America is a continent where everything wetha good or bad is seen as modernization n development

  11. Please. American influence was OK when the Ugandans were taking the blood money and the military training and invading the Congo. They wanted American “help” they got it. Too late to cry about it now.

  12. We Africans should be united and speak one voice. if a country sanctioned any African countries we have to make sanction upon them too then we will know where they will get their raw materials

  13. Now this is some interesting SHIT! This is what happens when you let the western world in your business. All Arab countries kill gays and enslave Africans not to mention Israel. Yet America does nothing to them. Damn shame.

  14. Their agent after the disgusting same sex will for child adoption or surrogate parentage. Can they ever be smarter than God almighty who has instituted procreation as d basis for marital unions. Crazy American apologists will pay dearly in long run by d grace of God

  15. There have always been homosexuals all over the world. The laws persecuting them were introduced by colonial powers – and currently – as can also be seen in this thread – there’s a hateful mass hysteria incited by useless politicians wanting to keep attention away from real issues, and this being very much influenced by American preachers of hate. This kind of use of minority groups has happened many timse in history and it’s the DUTY of every decent human being to speak up against it.
    Remember Niemöller’s poem:

First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Socialist.

Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

  16. To answer the question “Why are African countries alone being targeted with sanctions?”, the reason is that in Saudi Arabia and Egypt, you have a much higher burden of proof to get a conviction for a bugger to get decapitated, anyway. Also, homosexuality has already infiltrated those nations. The stance against homosexuality is already stronger in tropical Africa than it is in neighboring ME nations. The reputation alone might get you an @zz-whoopin in the tropics, where as in the ME, it will get you avoided. Also, the ME is next, after they get the agenda done in Africa.

  17. To Hell with America and their devilish intentions. God will soon punish them. They claim to be a god fearing nation but practises the devil’s way. Obama is just controlled by the devil to deceive god’s children.

  18. Silly question. Oil obviously. Though the fact that the US as a change speaks up for human rights, instead of abusing them, should be celebrated. And most important for a page about AFRICA should be to speak up against the current rampant mass hysteria against an innocent minority group in many African countries. I’m sick and tired of this condoning (or celebrating…) fascism when it happens in Africa.
