AFRICANGLOBE – It’s like science fiction movie straight out of a late 1950’s drive-in theater or a plot line from any number of comic books. But it appears to be true.
Scientists spent decades trying to find the Higgs boson “God Particle,” and when it was finally discovered in 2012 it was cause for great rejoicing.
But now über physicist Professor Stephen Hawking, the Director of Research at the Centre for Theoretical Cosmology at the University of Cambridge, is warning that the God Particle could be made to destroy the entire universe.
At very high energy levels, the Higgs boson could destabilize, causing space and time suddenly collapse. This would happen without warning, Hawking wrote.
The God particle gives shape and size to everything that exists.
But if subjected to a particle accelerator powerful enough, it could essentially cause the universe to implode.
The top particle accelerator currently in existence, the Cern particle accelerator, is to slow to do this.
“The Higgs potential has the worrisome feature that it might become megastable at energies above 100bn giga-electron-volts (GeV).
“This could mean that the universe could undergo catastrophic vacuum decay, with a bubble of the true vacuum expanding at the speed of light.
“This could happen at any time and we wouldn’t see it coming,” Hawking wrote.
What Is The Higgs Field?
A fraction of a second after the Big Bang, an invisible energy field, called the Higgs field, formed. As particles passed through it, they gained mass. (Think of an extremely tiny snowball rolling downhill, getting larger with every turn it takes). This allowed atoms to form.
Without passing through the Higgs energy field, particles would travel through space just as light does.
What Is A Boson?
A boson is a particle smaller than an atom. Every energy field has a specific type of particle that controls how it interacts with its surroundings. The Higgs energy field’s particle, or boson, is the Higgs Boson – the so-called God Particle.
