AFRICANGLOBE – Five protestors were shot Monday night outside of the Minneapolis Police Department’s 4th Precinct, by three white males that witnesses described as white supremacists. The protesters had been peacefully demonstrating against the recent murder of 24-year-old Jamar Clark by Minneapolis police, who was shot and killed while in police detention on November 15th.
White supremacists were spotted stalking the protestors late Friday night and even posted a taunting video of themselves wielding handguns and making veiled threats on Facebook.
The shooting took place, according to The Washington Post, around 10:40 pm Central Time. None of the victims are said to have life-threatening injuries according to Minneapolis police spokesman John Elder, although one was reportedly shot in the stomach and rushed to surgery.
“A group of white supremacists showed up at the protest, as they have done most nights,” Black Lives Matter media contact Miski Noor told the Minneapolis Star Tribune. The Tribune described how the events unfolded:
Jie Wronski-Riley said angry protesters moved the counter-demonstrators away from the encampment at the police station. Wronski-Riley heard what sounded like firecrackers and thought, “surely they’re not shooting human beings.” Two young black men on either side of him were hit, one in the back and leg, the other in the arm.
At least two of the three men who had been taunting protesters were firing guns, said Wronski-Riley, who described the incident as “really chaotic, really fast.”
Several organizers of the protests said that police sprayed demonstrators with mace following the shooting to control the crowd. The police have not responded to the allegations.
This is a developing story.
