The Jonesboro, Arkansas police continue to deny any wrong-doing in the shooting death of Chavis Carter and now their police chief is supporting them.

Police Chief Michael Yates in an interview with CNN, was asked about the ability to shoot oneself while handcuffed, he responded,

“For the average person that’s never been in handcuffs, that’s never been around inmates and people in custody would react exactly the same way that you just did, about how can that be possible. Well the fact of it is, it’s very possible and it’s quite easy.”

Police say that 21-year-old Chavis Carter, killed himself while handcuffed in the back of a squad car on July 28th.

Yates seemed to have changed his tune in this interview because when reports first surfaced of Carter’s suicide, Yates said it seemed “very unusual.”

Local police say his suicide is supported by dashboard cameras and witnesses who say the police were outside of the car at the time of the shooting.

However, Carter’s mother hired a lawyer and believes that her son did not kill himself. The FBI is also doing an investigation on the incident.
