Man Fatally Shot While Helping Domestic Assault Victim

AFRICANGLOBE – A Knoxville man is dead after being shot while trying to intervene in a domestic violence situation in Fountain City, police said.

Kelton Crawford, 37, was shot multiple times Monday night after coming to help a woman who had been assaulted by her ex-boyfriend at her residence, 155 Felix Road, according to a Knoxville Police Department news release.

The woman told authorities her ex-boyfriend, 30-year-old John A. Taylor, choked her unconscious. She tried to flee her apartment when she came to, but Taylor dragged her back inside and strangled her again, arrest warrants state.

After Taylor left, Crawford came to help. Crawford’s relationship to the woman was not immediately clear.

Taylor returned to the apartment with a gun and shot Crawford several times, according to the warrants.

Authorities responded to the scene at 6:38 p.m. to find Crawford in the front yard. He was transported to the University of Tennessee Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

Taylor was captured about 11:30 p.m. by KPD officers and U.S. Marshals.

He now faces charges of first-degree murder, aggravated domestic assault and aggravated kidnapping. Taylor remained jailed in lieu of $625,000 bond Tuesday.
