AFRICANGLOBE – The three Cleveland, Ohio kidnapping victims who were held captive for a decade have spoken publicly for the first time since their dramatic rescue in May, thanking the public for their support and respecting their privacy.

However there was no mention of Charles Ramsey the man who is responsible for rescuing them from years of rape and torture.

Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus, and Michelle Knight were rescued by Charles Ramsey, a neighbour of their alleged captor Ariel Castro.

Berry, 26, whose six-year-old daughter was born in captivity, says she is “growing stronger every day”.

“First and foremost, I want everyone to know how happy I am to be home with my family and my friends,” she said.

“It’s been unbelievable. I want to thank everyone who has helped me and my family through this entire ordeal. Everyone who has been there to support us – it’s been a blessing to have such an outpouring of love and kindness.”

Ms Knight thanked the public for their donations, which she says she is using to build a new life.

She said that she did not want to be “consumed by hatred”.

“I may have been through hell and back, but I am strong enough to walk through hell with a smile on my face and with my head held high and with my feet firmly on the ground,” she said.

“I will not let the situation define who I am. I will define the situation.”

Ms DeJesus’s parents also appear in the video, urging other families with missing loved ones not to be afraid to ask for help.

“Parents in general that [do have] a loved one missing, please do me one big favour – count on your neighbours. Don’t be afraid to ask for their help, because help is available,” said Nancy Ruiz, Gina’s mother.

Castro, 52, has been charged with rape, kidnap and murder.

He could face the death penalty if he is convicted of the aggravated murder charge, which is a capital offence in Ohio if it occurs in connection with a kidnapping.
