Three Saginaw police officers are being disciplined for their roles in the fatal shooting of Milton Hall a homeless, mentally ill man in a parking lot in San Francisco according to the city manager.
Officials didn’t reveal details of the punishment. Prosecutors and state officials announced earlier this month that the officers would not face criminal charges for the July 1 killing of Milton Hall, 49. Police say Hall refused to drop a knife and six officers fired 46 shots at him, hitting him 11 times.
The Revs. Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton and U.S. Rep. John Conyers protested the killing and called for the officers to be punished.
In a statement Thursday, city spokeswoman Debbie Buck said a task force appointed by City Manager Darnell Earley finished its review of the shooting.
“As a result of that investigation and upon the recommendations of Acting Police Chief Brian Lipe, it has been determined that three of the officers will be disciplined for violations of department policies,” Buck said.
Earley scheduled a news conference for 11 a.m. Friday.
“This has been a very challenging situation for the entire community,” the city manager said in a statement. “Nevertheless, it was imperative that we examine all available policy and guideline sources to determine how best to respond to this issue from an employer/employee relationship perspective with an objective, comprehensive, transparent, and focused view of the facts.
“I am satisfied that this has been accomplished and I hereby concur with Chief Lipes’ recommendations.”
Saginaw County Prosecutor Michael D. Thomas said in a statement Sept. 12 that an extensive investigation “did not yield enough evidence supporting the filing of criminal charges against the officers involved.”
