AFRICANGLOBE – An elementary school teacher in Selma, Ala., has been suspended without pay after she instructed her students to reenact the police-involved shooting death of unarmed Michael Brown.

Jessica Baughn, a mother of one of the students involved in the reenactment, filed a complaint about the incident on the ” Sound Off Selma” Facebook page. In her post, she expressed shocked over the incident:

I am absolutely shocked by what my 6th grade child come home telling me that happened in school (Brantley Elementary). His teacher made them reenact the two current shooting of the young Black male’s… The White students had to play the police officer. She even has them get on the internet and research how many times the young man was shot where he was shot at. That is absurd to me then you turn around and make them reenact every bit of it including the shooting…Then sit in class and tells them our Black children can not walk in their own neighborhood without White people shooting them and she hated to sound racist but whatever…. Sounds like someone’s racist to me, and to me they are teaching these children to hate one another when we’re supposed to be teaching them to love one another…

Dallas County School System Superintendent Don Willingham didn’t say how long the teacher would be suspended, but said she will return to the classroom eventually. Willingham added that he didn’t believe the teacher wanted to incite any racial division among the students.

“The problem wasn’t so much in the current events class for the sixth grade that you can’t discuss issues,” he said. “In that case, when they carried it to a reenactment, it was a real serious issue. It was a lot of passion on both sides. It’s still live. It’s on TV. She made poor judgement.”

Ferguson, Mo., where the 18-year-old’s shooting by Ferguson Police Department officer Darren Wilson took place, has experienced unrest since the teen’s shooting. The enhanced militarized presence of law enforcement has not helped calm the tense mood of protesters demanding that Darren Wilson be arrested and prosecuted.

While Willingham said he understands why Baughn was upset over the reenactment, he wishes she would have spoken to school officials first and not taken to social media to vent her frustrations.

Baughn, however, has no regrets over her decision to post her complaint on Facebook.

“But as a parent I think other parents need to know,” she replied. “That’s what’s wrong with society right now, parents are not aware of what’s going on in schools. They’re not aware of what their children are being exposed to, and me as a parent, I want to know,” she added.
