AFRICANGLOBE – Milo Yiannopoulos has resigned from Breitbart.
This announcement follows the emergence of a video in which the white supremacist defended the supposed-values of 13 year old boys having sex with older men, also resulting in the cancellation of his keynote speech at the Conservative Political Action Conference and in his publishers dropping his book deal.
Yiannopolous has made a career out of crudely attacking women, various ethnic groups, and the transgender community. His job at Breitbart made him one of the most prominent voices to be embraced by the alt-right white supremacy movement.
Twitter deactivated his account after he attacked Leslie Jones for the crime of starring in the new Ghostbusters movie, calling her a “black dude” and encouraging his supporters to post fake nudes of Jones online. Recently, a violent riot broke out at the University of Washington where he was scheduled to speak over rumors that he was going to release the identities of undocumented students at the school. (Yiannopolous has since denied he was planning this.)
“Trolling is very important,” Yiannopoulos told ABC’s Nightline. “I like to think of myself as a virtuous troll, you know? I’m doing God’s work.”
While he typically does not apologize for his offensive statements, the backlash over his comments on the “Drunken Peasants” podcast has been severe enough to compel him to apologize for “imprecise language.”
In the podcast, Yiannopolous said there were sometimes benefits for 13 year old boys to have sexual relations with older men, joking about his own sexual assault by a priest when he was still a boy. “And you know what,” Yiannopolous said. “I’m grateful for Father Michael. I wouldn’t give nearly such good head if it wasn’t for him.”
Reports emerged that many Breitbart staffers were threatening to quit if Yiannopolous was not removed from his position with the company.
Breitbart itself has also been accused of indulging hateful rhetoric. Previously owned by President Trump’s chief strategist Steve Bannon, Yiannopolous has published Breitbart articles with such headlines as “The Solution To Online ‘Harrassment’ Is Simple: Women Should Log Off” and “There’s no Hiring Bias Against Women In Tech, They Just Suck At Interviews”.
