AFRICANGLOBE - 'He shot all the people, please come,' were the words spoken by one of the Charleston church massacre survivors in a frantic 911 call after gunman Dylann Roof opened fire on her congregation. Polly Sheppard, 86, was spared by the white supremacist on June 17, 2015, to spread word of his killing spree. Roof killed nine parishioners at Emanuel AME Church in an attempt to start a race war.
AFRICANGLOBE - A jury on Thursday convicted Dylann Roof of slaughtering nine Black members of a Charleston, South Carolina, church. He was convicted of 33 federal charges, from hate crimes to the obstruction of the practice of religion. Roof, 22, walked into the historic Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church, commonly referred to as “Mother Emanuel,” in June 2015 during Bible study. He sat with congregation members before taking out a gun and starting his massacre.
AFRICANGLOBE - The twist and turns; and delays in the Charleston shooter’s murder case is clear prove that judges might want to throw this case out of the window as it has usually been in similar circumstances. The institutional racism which has eaten deep into the American judicial system is really a cause for alarm. No wonder Black people in America never get justice. All evidence points to the fact that Roof is actually guilty of the offense; yet, the justice system wants to finds dubious means to clear him off the charges.
AFRICANGLOBE - Dylann Roof, the racially motivated terrorist who massacred nine African American parishioners last year at Charleston's Emanuel AME Church, was attacked and beaten Thursday by a Black man in a South Carolina jail, authorities said.
AFRICANGLOBE - The U.S. Justice Department will seek capital punishment for white terrorist Dylann Roof, who is charged with slaughtering nine Black parishioners at a South Carolina church, according to America’s top lawyer.
AFRICANGLOBE - The chief prosecutor in Charleston, South Carolina will seek the death penalty for Dylann Roof, the white supremacist charged with murdering nine members of a historic African-American church.
AFRICANGLOBE - There’s another element of Dylann Roof’s story that we must not ignore. Because just as much as Roof is a product of America’s past, he is also the result of distinctively modern forces. Namely, the large, multinational and influential “white nationalist” movement that is bringing together white supremacists from all over the world.
AFRICANGLOBE - Roof’s cousin, Scott Roof, told The Intercept that the 21-year-old terrorist was “normal” until “he started listening to that white power music stuff.” Scott added that Dylann “kind of went over the edge when a girl he liked starting dating a Black guy two years back.”
AFRICANGLOBE - The morgue tag was still on Sharonda Coleman-Singleton’s toe when her teenage children stood in front of news cameras and said they had forgiven Dylann Roof for murdering their mother in cold blood. The grieving teens’ absolution of Roof came not more than 72 hours after a white terrorist sat inside the historic Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church for an hour watching their mother pray to God. Instead of accepting the welcoming arms and love offered by the community, the gunman shot her and eight others to death.
AFRICANGLOBE - Shelby Police Chief Jeff Ledford told the Charlotte Observer that when Roof complained he was hungry, cops went to a nearby Burger King and bought the accused mass murderer a meal while he was in custody.
AFRICANGLOBE - Flags were flying at half-staff on Thursday in South Carolina after the cold-blooded killing of nine Black people in an historic African-American church in Charleston - with one notable exception. Outside the legislature in the state capital Columbia, the racially divisive Confederate battle flag still flies high, renewing debate over its symbolism more than 150 years after the Civil War defeat of the slave-holding rebel South.
AFRICANGLOBE - What are avowed white supremacists saying about the shooting? There are 19 hate groups currently operating in South Carolina, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center. None of these groups have claimed affiliation with Roof as of yet—though Roof has been photographed wearing a jacket adorned with the flags of Apartheid-era South Africa and Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe), suggesting, at least, that he may have held some pretty traditional racist views.
AFRICANGLOBE - In so many ways, the story of Dylann Roof, the White supremacist mass murderer who killed nine people in an historic South Carolina Black church, is a parallel to the story of America itself. We are a country where terror against Black people and communities, where white racists have long targeted Black churches, where African-American life is so devalued it can be taken with impunity.
