AFRICANGLOBE - A Florida male convicted of first-degree murder for fatally shooting a teenager in an argument over loud music outside a Jacksonville convenience store was sentenced Friday to life in prison without parole.
AFRICANGLOBE - This is a season in which we are witnessing the senseless murder of Black people by White hands, hands that occupy a privileged White space. This is a season in which the victimhood of White killers – their implied innocence – is accepted or taken as given. This verdict in Florida on Wednesday afternoon tips towards a promise that justice is truly blind. But justice in America is fickle.
AFRICANGLOBE - Michael Dunn, the man who shot and killed African-American teen Jordan Davis, was found guilty of first-degree murder in a retrial on Wednesday. Dunn made national headlines in November 2012 after he approached a vehicle at a Jacksonville gas station that was allegedly playing loud music.
AFRICANGLOBE - Jury selection begins today for Michael David Dunn, the 47-year-old man who shot unarmed 17-year-old Jordan Davis dead at a gas station in Jacksonville, Fla., in Novermber of 2012, The Florida Times-Union reports.
AFRICANGLOBE - There has been little if any discussion of the macro-level cultural motivations that drove Michael Dunn to murder an unarmed teenager, and to feel right and legitimate in doing so, because the latter's music was "offensive" and he dared to "talk back" to a White male.
AFRICANGLOBE - Florida’s justice system pimped Creshuna Miles for her body type and flawed perspective. I’m not angry with Creshuna Miles, but I know her thinking, uninformed as it is, is dangerous. That she felt compelled as a Black female in the case to come out and insist on all the ways that it wasn’t about race suggests how deeply it is about race.
AFRICANGLOBE - Florida's "Stand Your Ground" laws sanction America's legacy of untreated trauma, which stems from a history in which irrational White fear and Black male threat were intimately intertwined, a deadly historical relationship in which black men routinely paid with their lives.
AFRICANGLOBE - In a series of racist letters he sent from jail while awaiting trial, Michael Dunn voices a problem he seems to have regarding race, or at least Black culture and attitudes as he sees it. “This jail is full of Blacks and they all act like thugs,” he wrote. “This may sound a bit radical but if more people would arm themselves and kill these … idiots when they’re threatening you, eventually they may take the hint and change their behavior…. The more time I am exposed to these people, the more prejudiced against them I become.”
AFRICANGLOBE - Blacks do not have human rights in the United States. We have been in a state of siege since the assassination of Martin Luther King in 1968 and we need a movement for human rights and a movement to wake up our people because we are being destroyed.
AFRICANGLOBE - A trial that put race relations in the national spotlight ended Saturday night with a verdict that appeared to please no one. Jurors deadlocked on whether Michael David Dunn, murdered Jordan Davis or shot him in self-defense. Judge Russell Healey declared a mistrial on the murder charge.
AFRICANGLOBE - But Michael David Dunn, on trial for first-degree murder and three counts of attempted murder, said Jordan Davis reached down, picked something up and slammed it against the rear-passenger door of the red Dodge Durango where he was sitting.
AFRICANGLOBE - The killing of another unarmed Black teen by a White man claiming self defense under Florida’s shoot-first law — aka "Stand Your Ground" — has made national news. The incident occurred at a gas station in late 2012, when 45-year-old Michael Dunne allegedly ended an altercation over loud music coming from a car with a group of teens by firing multiple shots into the vehicle and fleeing the scene.
AFRICANGLOBE - The case of a Titusville Beach-area man who shot an unarmed Black teenager dead in a Jacksonville-area gas station in a dispute over loud music is proceeding slowly after two judges excused themselves from hearing the case.
