AFRICANGLOBE – The 2013 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) closed with a dazzling musical performance by African artists at South Africa’s National Stadium outside Soweto on Sunday.

The closing ceremony, which was also attended by Fifa president Sepp Blatter, reflected the continent’s urban and contemporary side.

It featured a performance by South African superstar and goodwill ambassador for the Roll Back Malaria Partnership, Yvonne Chaka Chaka, who wowed fans with her song, Hearts on Fire.

She was accompanied by 150 children from local townships who participated in the organisation’s outreach programme, and traditional dancers from Lesedi.

Following Chaka Chaka was Kenyan vocalist Muthoni, South Africa’s Thembisile Ntaka, Nigeria’s D’Banj, and local musicians Zonke, Kelly Khumalo and Micasa.

Following the ceremony, Nigeria and Burkina Faso locked horns to decide the champion team of Africa before a packed crowd of 85,000, with South African President Jacob Zuma and a host of other dignitaries in attendance.

Not only were there supporters of the finalists in the stadium, but also plenty of football fans in the colours of the host nation’s national football team, Bafana Bafana.

After 94 minutes of action, Nigeria’s Super Eagles had secured their third Afcon title by a 1-0 margin.
